Friends of Lake Pocotopaug have been working to reduce the algae concentration in our lake.  The presence of increased concentrations of nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorous) allows algae to grow at a high rate in our lake (we estimate 10%/day) and in many other lakes around the world. The high concentrations of algae give the lake a green color and are unpleasant to look at but are generally not harmful. The long term solution is to decrease the input of nutrients into the lake by measures taken in the watershed. This is long term and expensive and we support it.
